Learn More About The Project / FAQ
Why are you conducting this survey?
We are two regular bicycle riders who would like to see additional safe
and convenient bicycle parking facilities installed in New York City. The city has committed to carrying
out a comprehensive program of bicycle infrastructure improvements and we aim to integrate
the public? voice into this process. We put this survey
together in order to more effectively gauge the public’s bicycle
riding behaviors, patterns and parking needs. We will be presenting
our survey results and analysis to the New York City Department of City Planning's
Transportation Division, as well as to our classmates and
professor in our graduate urban planning course at Hunter College.
Who should complete the survey?
Anyone who has something to say about bicycle parking within New York
City, and especially those who live in or near the city and cycle with some
frequency within the five boroughs.
Why are you asking about bike parking at my workplace and where I
live?
We’re excited about progressive employers or landlords who not
only allow, but also make it more convenient, for employees and tenants to
bring their bikes inside. Some even provide specialized indoor bicycle
parking facilities, occasionally at a nominal cost. The city plans to use
this data to encourage other employers and landlords to do the same.
Why are you asking for my e-mail address?
We would like to keep you abreast of our efforts and provide you with
our survey results and reports. We may also get back in touch with you
to ask you to answer one or two follow-up questions. We will not
publish or distribute your e-mail address to any third party under any circumstances,
and will delete them off our secure servers at the conclusion of this study
in December.
What will you do with the survey data you collect?
Individual location suggestions for outdoor racks and data on indoor
bicycle parking locations will be marked on the maps in our maps
page. We’ll analyze the aggregated location data in order to
present a report to the Department of City Planning on where bicycle
parking needs are greatest within New
York City. DCP will incorporate these
findings in their future bicycle planning decisions. We will make the results of the
survey available on this website at the conclusion of the project.
Does my input actually guarantee bike rack installation?
No, but the information will help us identify broader patterns of need
on a neighborhood and citywide basis and will be used by the Department of
City Planning to generate recommended installation sites to the Department
of Transportation.
What is the process by which bicycle racks are currently installed in the
five boroughs?
The NYC Department of Transportation? City Racks program currently takes requests
from city residents who would like a rack installed at suggested locations. The DOT
then visits the locations to determine if the location meets certain criteria including
whether there is an appropriate amount of space for safe installation. In addition,
business improvement districts as well as private property owners often install their
own bicycle parking facilities for public use.
Will you publish the results of this survey? How can I learn
more about the results of this survey?
We will update our maps page with location markers of suggested bicycle
parking sites every few days. You will be able to see where other
survey respondents would like more bicycle parking installed, as well as
the locations of existing indoor bicycle parking facilities. We will
be producing an interim report of survey results at the end of November,
2007, which we will make available on this website. This report will
also be presented to the NYC Department of City Planning, and together we
will be choosing a neighborhood, or a set of specific sites to do a more
detailed site planning analysis using a GIS (Geographic Information
System). This site analysis will be completed by mid-December, 2007,
and will also be made available on this website.
When will this project be done?
This project will conclude at the end of December, 2007.
